Benzoic acid is a scaly or acicular crystal having the odor of benzene or formaldehyde, chemical formula C6H5COOH. The melting point is 122.13 , the boiling point is 249 , and the relative density is 1.2659(15/4 ). Benzoic acid is a weak acid, stronger than fatty acids. Their chemical properties are similar, can form salt, ester, acyl halide, amide, acid anhydride, etc., are not easy to be oxidized. The electrophilic substitution reaction can occur on the benzene ring of benzoic acid, and the main substituted products are obtained.
Benzoic acid is a simple aromatic carboxylic acid, with aromatics, but also has the properties of carboxylic acid, so two kinds of chemical reactions can occur, one is the substitution reaction on the benzene ring, and the other is the reaction of the carboxylic group.
